The Little Mermaid and Why I Have “Issues” With It

A few months ago, my daughter “fell” in love with Ariel.  I am not sure if she really likes her or if she just likes her because my mother-in-law likes Ariel.  What ever the reason, we thought it would be good to get Goose the movie.  And as I sat there watching it with her, I realized that I really do have some issues with what’s going on in this movie.

1.  Ariel does not listen to her father. As a parent, you want to keep your children safe.  In the underwater world in the Little Mermaid, Ariel is told directly by her father that it is unsafe and not acceptable to go to the surface.  It is also forbidden to talk and be seen by the humans.  Ariel disregards everything her father says!  She goes to the surface, and even falls in love with a human!  Now, I think he could have handled the situation a little better, but then again, she could have a little respect.

2.  Ariel looses her own identity.  When Ariel falls in love with Eric, she gives up all that she was, and completely transforms into the person Eric wants her to be.  In a relationship it is good to have like interests, and discover new activities that both of you like.  You should never forget who you are and where you come from.  In the movie, I feel that Ariel forgets that.

3.  THE CHILD IS ONLY 16!!!  Need I say more?  I mean really.  In the USA, I believe that you have to be 18 to legally marry (unless you have a parent’s or court’s consent).  Some countries it is a little different.  You can view those laws here.  I met my husband when I was 16, and we were married a few months after I turned 18.  I would have never EVER gotten married when I was 16, I was just too young and unsure about life.

4.  Ariel ran away from home!  When Ariel did not get her way, she decided to just leave home.  There was no going to her father to try and talk any more, no trying to just let things settle down, she just left home.  That is scary to me.  I don’t want my daughter to think this is acceptable.  It would be best if we could talk things out, and let our feelings be heard.  It really makes me sad that Ariel felt this was the only way she could be happy.

Now, all that being said, I grew up watching The Little Mermaid, and I feel I turned out fine.  It’s just as a parent, you take things like this and see them in a new light.  The movie does teach that we should accept others no matter who they are, but that message is kind of taken to the extreme.

If you have any comments, please feel free to reply, just remember I do not and will not feed the trolls.

Parking Pal Magnet Bundle Pack Review

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Since Goose started walking, I’ve been worried about her running away in parking lots.  I constantly keep a hand on her, but I’ve found that she still thinks parking lots are playgrounds.  I’ve started making her touch the car, and pretend that the car is a magnet that keeps her hand stuck until we get the door open (thanks Sarah for the tip).
One other thing we have been using is the Parking Pal.  The Parking Pal is a car magnet that you place on the side of your car where ever you want your child to stand while you get his/her car door open and car seat ready.  They place their hand on the hand print and children can learn that this is the spot near the car that is safe for them.
Parking Pal Magnet Bundle Pack Review
I still keep a hand on Goose while using this, but I am more confident that she will be safe since she is paying more attention to the magnet than anything else going on in the parking lot.
Parking Pal also makes the Penalty Pal.  These are removable stickers that can be placed almost ANYWHERE.
The Penalty Pal was designed to help children learn where to go when they are in need of a “time out”.   The graphics start out with a frowny face clock and progress to a happy face clock, helping children realize that they need to stay in their spot until they can be happy.

I really like these because I can remove them without wrecking my wall and place the sticker somewhere else.
Another removable adhesive sticker Parking Pal has is their Emergency Contact List.
These are great!  You just write on them with a fine point permanent marker, pill off the back and stick it where ever you need it.  These are awesome because if a phone number changes or you just want to change something, you just use a little alcohol and wipe it clean.  Then you can write the information you need on there.

Valentine’s Day Gift Idea: Name a Star Review and Giveaway

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

If you are looking for an unique gift for Valentine’s Day, here is one idea for you.  You could have a star named after the one you love!

I decided to do this for my hubby for our anniversary that’s coming up.  It was really easy to do too.

1.  You will need to go to http://nameastar.thesuperartlab.com/
2. Click on the right hand side where it says buy now.
3. Scroll down that page until you find the graphic that says “buy now”.
4. Enter your info, recipient’s name, and message.
5. Once you make your payment, you should receive your certificate via email within 48 hours.

Once you receive your email with your certificate, it can get a little tricky.
1.  You have to go to http://nameastar.thesuperartlab.com/find-star/
2.  Scroll down until you see this button:

3.  Once you click on that, you will be taken to DropBox (which is not bad to have BTW), where you can download the file to find your star.
  • I was kind of leery of this at first.  I wasn’t sure about it since it was taking me to another site to download a file (even though I trust dropbox, anything could have been put into there).  So I had my hubby check it out (he is a Certified Linux Administrator).  He says that it is fine, but remind everyone to make sure you trust sites that you are downloading from, and to have a GOOD Anti Virus that is up to date, installed, and running.
4.  If Google Earth is installed correctly all you have to do is double click to open the file. When Google Earth opens it prompts you to switch to sky mode

5.Then you go through the list of stars and double click on it and it takes you to it.
You can see our star is pinned with my husband’s name and the message I had for him over to the left.
I am really pleased with how everything looks, and at $12.99, I think it is a great gift for anyone who loves to look at the stars.
The great people over at Name A Star are also letting me give one to a very lucky reader.  To enter to win, use the Giveaway Tools widget below.  You can enter anytime until 2/12/2014 at 11:59pm.

Vinyl Disorder Finger Nail Art Review

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

I have found a great way to dress up plain boring nails!  It’s called Finger Nail Art by Vinyl Disorder.  And it’s super simple to apply.  First, you want to make sure you have freshly painted nail or clean unpainted nail.  Take one of the small decals off the sheet, and grasp between your pointer finger and thump.  Then you just have to apply it to where ever you want on your nail.  That simple.  And that is how I did my nails above.

There is one suggestion I have to make.  If you want the decals to last longer, apply a top coat of clear of transparent nail polish on top of the decal.  I put the ones above on last night, and they were driving me nuts by this morning.  They would get caught in my hair and on my clothes, and were about to come off.  I couldn’t find any clear nail polish, but I did find some pearlizing top coat, and I think it turned out really well.

If you are interested in Vinyl Disorder’s Finger Nail Art, you can check it out on their website: http://www.vinyldisorder.com/finger-nail-art.html .  You can also purchase them there.  They have all sorts of decals you can choose from.  I got the hearts and starts, and am very happy with them.

Happy Birthday Goose!

Today my little toddler became a preschooler!  Its both a happy and sad time, as I realize a door to our life has shut and another one opened.

She had a wonderful birthday party at the studio where she takes dance, and had a bunch of friends come.  We are so blessed to have a wonderful family and great bunch of friends.

Here is a slide show of her throughout the years.

BREASTFEEDING PHOTOS ON FACEBOOK

There has been some drama recently in a group that I am a part of on Facebook.  Some troll is going through this breastfeeding support group and reporting any photos that show children eating.  Last night I got sick of it.  I was going to contact Facebook directly to see if they could remove the person from the group since it was/is harassment and reports are anonymous.  Here is what I stumbled upon though…

So there you go trolls!  As long as that baby is nursing, Facebook believes what the mothers are doing is “natural and beautiful”.

That page can be found at https://www.facebook.com/help/www/340974655932193 if you need to see it for yourself.

“Colded” In

While we don’t have much snow here in our little part of the world, it is really cold.  And it’s been cold for the past week or two.

So Goose and I have been “colded” in.  After the newness of all she got for Christmas wore off, we started to go a little stir crazy.  There is really only so much TV you can watch and after a while music gets a little old.  But, I had to come up with something.

Some people may not know this, but I used to make and sell jewelry.  In fact, I have a ton of supplies, and haven’t really touched it since Goose was born almost 3 years ago.

I haven’t been using so I decided to let Goose play with it, and I thought I could make a few things as well.  Here is what we came up with.

I put pin backs on these for her, so that she could give them to people as pins.

I thought this necklace turned out really well.

This is one I made out of Jasper and Lepidolite

This one is made out of Onyx and Malachite

These two are candle holders we made with seed beads.  We put glue all over the candle older and then rolled them in seed beads.  I think they turned out really well.
As you can see we had a bit of fun.  Now on to the next “colded” in activity.
