Gluten issues is something that has been going on in our family for a while now, and it always amazes me how bland and tasteless the products are that are available.
Recently, my sister and I got to try the Our House baking mixes. We honestly had never tried to make anything out of gluten free all purpose flour, but decided there was no better time like the present.
The recipe for biscuits was a lot different than what we normally do. The recipe called for:
- 1 ½ cups Our House Gluten-Free Baking Mix (228 grams)
- 1 tsp sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- 4 tbsp vegetable shortening
- ¾ cup milk (or milk alternative)
- 1 large egg (or 1/3 cup applesauce)
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
We also are used to cutting out the biscuits, so we went ahead and did that.
Baking was about normal, and they looked just like normal biscuits when they came out of the oven. The texture at first was a little different though. You could tell they were a little different than normal biscuits. It almost felt like we had added a little bit of finely ground cornmeal to the mixture.
Overall, I think our biscuits made from the Our House Gluten Free All Purpose Baking mix turned out really well. You could tell there was something a little different about them, but the biscuits were very good.
My next adventure is to try the Our House Bread Mix, which can be put in the bread machine (kind of excited about that part).
